How to Create an Online Store in Morocco in 2026: Shopify, WooCommerce or a Custom Site?

To create an online store in Morocco, you need five things: a platform (a hosted builder like Shopify, Wix or the Moroccan YouCan, WooCommerce on WordPress, or a custom site), a domain name in your brand’s name, a product catalogue with real photos, a way to get paid (cash on delivery, and card payment through a Moroccan bank’s e-commerce service), and a delivery partner. The right platform depends less on features than on who will run the store every day and how you plan to sell: mostly through Instagram and WhatsApp, or through Google search and repeat customers.

This guide is written by Kolchi In One (KIO), a digital agency in Casablanca that builds websites, online stores and the CRM and WhatsApp systems behind them. It is the practical version of what we explain to every business owner who asks us “how do I start selling online?”

Why so many Moroccans are searching for this right now

On Google Trends for Morocco over the last 90 days, interest in “ecommerce” climbed sharply in October. Among the related searches, “woocommerce” is marked Breakout (Google’s label for growth of more than 5,000%), “ecommerce website builder” is up 1,850% and “ecommerce website” 160%. In French, “comment créer un site web de vente en ligne” is also a Breakout. People are not just curious: they are comparing tools and getting ready to build.

The four ways to build an online store

1. A hosted store builder: Shopify, Wix, YouCan

You rent a ready-made store. Hosting, security and updates are handled by the platform, and you can open a store in a few days. YouCan is a Moroccan platform built with cash on delivery and local sellers in mind; Shopify and Wix are international.

  • Good for: starting fast, small catalogues, owners who want no technical work.
  • Watch out for: a monthly subscription that never stops, paid apps that add up, limits on design and data, and the question of which payment methods actually work for a business based in Morocco. Check this before you choose.

2. WooCommerce on WordPress

WooCommerce is a free, open-source plugin that turns a WordPress website into a store. You need hosting and someone to keep it updated, but you own everything: the site, the design, the customer data.

  • Good for: businesses that want a real website plus a store, strong SEO, a blog, and full control.
  • Watch out for: updates, backups and security are your responsibility. A neglected WooCommerce site becomes slow and vulnerable.

3. A custom-built store

Built for your exact process: wholesale prices, quotes, orders that go straight into your CRM, stock shared with a physical shop, or a WhatsApp ordering flow.

  • Good for: businesses with a specific workflow that ready-made platforms force you to work around.
  • Watch out for: it takes longer to build and needs a team you trust to maintain it.

4. Selling only on Instagram and WhatsApp

Many Moroccan brands start here, and it works. But you depend on one platform, every order is typed by hand, and you cannot appear on Google when someone searches for your product. A store does not replace Instagram; it gives your Instagram traffic a place to convert.

Step by step: from idea to first order

  1. Decide how you will sell. Social media first, Google first, or both. This decides the platform more than any feature list.
  2. Buy your domain name (.ma or .com) in your brand’s name, registered to you, not to a freelancer.
  3. Prepare the catalogue: clear photos on a plain background, honest descriptions, sizes and variants, and stock levels.
  4. Set up payment. Offer cash on delivery, which Moroccan shoppers still use widely. For card payment in dirhams, ask your bank about its e-commerce service; in Morocco this usually runs through the CMI (Centre Monétique Interbancaire) gateway.
  5. Choose a delivery partner that collects cash on delivery and gives tracking: Amana (Barid Al-Maghrib) or a private courier.
  6. Write your legal pages: terms of sale, delivery and returns, privacy. Show your company name and contact details clearly.
  7. Add a WhatsApp button on every product page. In Morocco, many buyers want to ask one question before they order.
  8. Test a full order on your own phone, from product page to confirmation message, before you announce anything.

The rules you need to know

  • Law 31-08 on consumer protection covers distance selling: clear information before the sale, and a right for the buyer to withdraw within 7 days in most cases.
  • Law 09-08 on personal data applies to your customer list. Collect only what you need, protect it, and check your declaration obligations with the CNDP.
  • Your company registration and identifiers should appear on your invoices and in your legal notice.

Mistakes that kill new online stores

  • Not confirming cash-on-delivery orders. A quick WhatsApp or phone confirmation before shipping cuts refused parcels and wasted delivery fees.
  • A slow site on mobile. Most of your visitors come from Instagram on a phone. Heavy images and too many plugins lose them in seconds.
  • Answering messages hours later. A buyer who asks “is it available in black?” and waits all afternoon buys elsewhere.
  • No return policy. Buyers who hesitate look for it before they pay.
  • Building the store and stopping there. A store needs traffic: content, ads, Google and a Google Business Profile if you also have a shop.

Where KIO fits

We build online stores on WooCommerce or as custom sites, and connect them to what happens after the order: a CRM that tracks every lead and order, and a WhatsApp AI agent that answers product questions and confirms orders in Darija, Arabic, French or English, day and night. Frequently asked questions

Which is better in Morocco: Shopify or WooCommerce?

Shopify is faster to start and needs no maintenance from you. WooCommerce gives you more control, better content and SEO options, and no platform lock-in. If you will sell mostly through social media with a small catalogue, a hosted builder is fine. If Google, content and long-term ownership matter, WooCommerce or a custom site is usually the better base.

Can I accept card payments on my Moroccan store?

Yes. Ask your bank for its e-commerce acquiring service, which is usually connected through the CMI gateway. Check that your chosen platform supports that gateway before you build.

Do I need a company to sell online in Morocco?

To sell regularly, issue invoices and sign a card-payment contract with a bank, you need a legal structure such as a company or auto-entrepreneur status. Ask an accountant which one fits your activity.

How long does it take to launch a store?

A simple store on a hosted builder can be ready in days. A complete WooCommerce or custom store with payment, delivery and CRM connections takes a few weeks, mostly spent on content and testing.
